Depression in older adults often doesn't look like sadness at all. Clinicians call it "depression without sadness" — no tears, no visible sorrow, just a flat, numb, nothing feeling. And because it doesn't look like depression, it's one of the most under-recognized health issues in adults over 55.In this episode, health psychologist Dr. Mary Catherine George gets personally honest — including about being on medication herself — and walks through the three quiet signs of late-life depression that are easiest to miss:1️⃣ NO ANTICIPATION — You book the trip, schedule the event… and feel nothing. The clinical word is anhedonia: the part of your brain that registers pleasure goes quiet. You catch yourself performing excitement instead of feeling it.2️⃣ THE SHRINKING WORLD — It creeps up slowly: friends move away, you hesitate to say yes, and staying home always feels easier. The question that reveals it: "When's the last time I said yes to something because I WANTED to?"3️⃣ BODY COMPLAINTS WITHOUT A CAUSE — Fatigue, achiness, dull headaches, sleep that's never enough — but the doctor says your tests look fine. Late-life depression often shows up in the body, not in tears. "I'm just getting older" is not always the real explanation. The question that ties it all together: Are you sad — or do you just not feel anything? Sadness is loud; it announces itself. Flatness is quiet, and "at least I'm not crying" is not the same as fine.MC also shares what actually helps: saying the truth out loud to one trusted person ("I haven't felt like myself lately — not sad, just nothing"), scheduling things anyway, small steps instead of white-knuckling it alone, and the surprising power of doing something in service of someone else.💙 If you're struggling, you don't have to figure this out alone. What if aging well isn't about diet, exercise, or genetics — but about what you believe about getting older? The research on positive aging is stunning: people with positive beliefs about their own aging live 7.5 years longer than people without them. Measured in people in their 50s and 60s, tracked for 23 years. In this episode, health psychologist Dr. Mary Catherine George breaks down the science of aging beliefs and self-perception of aging — and the three places negative "old age" self-talk quietly does its damage: your memory, your movement, and your stress response. You'll learn the three traps and the three small daily actions that counter them:🧠 MEMORY — Why "senior moment" self-talk ("I'm losing it") makes you more anxious and makes remembering harder — and the once-a-day reframe that breaks the loop ("My brain is busy. It'll come to me.")🚶 MOVEMENT — Walking speed is one of the strongest longevity signals we have: an adult whose walking speed drops sharply over two years has a 90% higher risk of dying. But in studies, people who reframed their beliefs about walking improved their speed — not because their body changed, but because their belief did.😤 STRESS — How "am I too old for this?" thinking triggers cortisol and affects your heart — and the one-sentence morning journaling practice that, in just four weeks, improved memory, balance, and walking speed.Plus: why nearly half of adults over 65 CAN improve in memory and movement, how our culture's aging story works against us, and MC's own reframe after two hip replacements — "I'm a warrior who has survived."📥 FREE E-BOOK — Chronic Pain: Use Your Brain Power. The science of laughter is stranger — and stronger — than you'd think. In Part 2, health psychologist Dr. Mary Catherine George walks through what laughter actually does to your body: how it releases your brain's own natural opioids, what it does to your blood vessels and heart health, and what a 15-year study of 53,556 people found about sense of humor and living longer. The research covered in this episode:🧪 The wall-sit experiments — comedy audiences could tolerate discomfort significantly longer after a show, evidence that laughter raises your natural pain threshold🧠 The 2017 Finnish PET-scan study that confirmed it: laughing triggers endogenous opioid release in the brain — your own built-in painkillers❤️ Dr. Michael Miller's University of Maryland experiments on the endothelium (the active lining of every blood vessel you have): across 300+ measurements, blood vessels were 30–50% wider after funny movies than stressful ones — a vascular effect his team compared to aerobic exercise or a statin😂 The heart disease questionnaire: patients with heart disease were 40% less likely to find everyday situations funny🇳🇴 The HUNT study (Nord-Trøndelag, Norway): 53,556 people followed for 15 years. The surprise? It wasn't how much you laugh or how funny you are — it's how readily you PERCEIVE things as funny. In women, that cognitive component was associated with 48% lower all-cause mortality, 73% lower cardiovascular mortality, and 83% lower infection-related mortality. And because this channel doesn't over-claim: MC is honest about the limits — these findings are observational, laughter is not a replacement for your medication, and the famous "children laugh 400 times a day, adults only 15" statistic turns out to be a myth (the real adult number is closer to 17). What survives the scrutiny is still remarkable: real belly laughter is free, has no side effects, and works like a health multiplier — a genuine coping resource for aging, chronic pain, and mood.▶ WATCH PART 1 FIRST — how a health psychologist ended up doing stand-up right after Jim Gaffigan: https://youtu.be/prD87qI_lZg?si=6vDMidaYE-4faLEd📥 FREE E-BOOK — Chronic Pain: Use Your Brain Power. What are the real health benefits of laughter? Not the greeting-card version — the measured, physical effects: what a deep belly laugh actually does to your muscles, your breathing, your nervous system, and your aging body.To find out, health psychologist Dr. Mary Catherine George did something terrifying: after six years of silent PhD research, she signed up for a stand-up comedy class at Gotham Comedy Club in New York — open mics, bombing in front of classmates, writing a "tight five," all of it. And on her performance night, Jim Gaffigan walked in and did the set right before hers.In Part 1 of this two-part episode on laughter and health, MC shares that story and starts unpacking the science: why laughter isn't an emotion but a whole-body sensation, what a 15-year study tracking 53,000 Norwegians suggests about laughter and living longer, and evolutionary psychologist Robin Dunbar's six experiments — from the lab to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival — designed to answer whether laughter really releases endorphins. She's honest about the research, too: some laughter studies over-claim, and she separates what's solid from what's hype.Part 1 ends right as the Dunbar experiments get interesting — Part 2 digs into the results and what they mean for your health as you age.🔑 IN THIS EPISODE:✦ Why a health psychologist took a stand-up comedy class — and performed after Jim Gaffigan✦ What laughter physically is: a muscular, respiratory, whole-body workout for your nervous system✦ The 53,000-person Norwegian study on laughter that no doctor ever mentions✦ Why laughter research is full of over-claiming — and what the honest version says✦ Robin Dunbar's endorphin experiments, from the lab to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival✦ Why doing something that scares you might be exactly what your health needs📥 FREE E-BOOK — Chronic Pain: Use Your Brain Power. How well are you aging? These four simple aging tests — the grip strength test, the sit-to-stand test, the single-leg balance test, and the walking speed test — can be done at home in under ten minutes and reveal more about healthy aging than the number on your scale. In this episode, health psychologist Dr. Mary Catherine George shows you exactly how to run each at-home aging self-check: how to measure grip strength with an inexpensive hand dynamometer, how to time your sit-to-stand from a chair, how long you should be able to balance on one leg by age, and what your usual walking speed says about your health and longevity. The key: track against your own baseline — not population norms — so you catch early warning signs of muscle loss, fall risk, and mobility decline while there's still time to act. Then she covers what the metrics can't measure: the research linking grip strength and walking speed to cognitive function and brain health, how repetitive negative thinking undermines your health, why depression in older adults often shows up as "depression without sadness" — no tears, just lost interest and energy — and the landmark research on positive self-perception of aging: people with a positive attitude toward their own aging live 7.5 years longer on average.🔑 WHAT YOU'LL LEARN:✦ The 4 at-home aging tests: grip strength, sit-to-stand, single-leg balance & walking speed✦ What each test screens for: muscle loss (sarcopenia), fall risk, frailty, and cardiovascular health✦ When a declining result means it's time to talk to your doctor✦ Why grip strength and walking speed predict cognitive performance — not just physical health✦ How to stop repetitive negative thinking with a simple mindfulness reset✦ The overlooked signs of depression in adults over 55✦ How mood and mobility feed each other, in both directions✦ Her monthly health check-in routine — after losing 55 lbs, a hip replacement, and knee osteoarthritis✦ Why a positive aging mindset is a health multiplier that adds years to your life📥 FREE E-BOOK — Chronic Pain: Use Your Brain Power. Did you know that 10,000 steps — the number baked into your smartwatch, your fitness app, and every corporate wellness program — was never based on science? It came from a Japanese pedometer marketing campaign in 1965.And for decades, that arbitrary number has been quietly discouraging millions of older adults from moving at all — because if you can't hit the "minimum," why start? In this episode, Dr. Mary Catherine George — health psychologist and your guide to intentional healthy aging — breaks down the new science of movement for older adults: why short bursts of exercise ("exercise snacks") are just as powerful as long workouts, what movement does to your brain, and how she personally fits 10-minute sessions with weights into her day — before her coffee is finished.🔑 WHAT YOU'LL LEARN:✦ The surprising origin of the 10,000 steps goal — and the number the research actually supports (7,000)✦ What "exercise snacking" is and why the science behind it is remarkable✦ How just 4.5 minutes of vigorous daily activity is linked to a 32% reduction in cancer risk✦ What BDNF is — and why researchers call it "fertilizer for the brain"✦ Why people who haven't been active get the LARGEST benefit when they begin✦ The real-life way Dr. George snacks on movement: calf raises at the coffee maker, farmer's walks on phone calls✦ What the EXERT trial says about light exercise and cognitive decline📥 FREE E-BOOK — Chronic Pain: Use Your Brain Power. Chronic Low Back Pain: When to Seek Help, What to Try First, and Lessons From Back SurgeryThis episode discusses chronic low back pain with the host and his brother Noel, a nurse practitioner with 30+ years of experience who previously had back surgery for spinal stenosis. They describe how back pain can start subtly, come and go, and worsen with poor posture and body mechanics, often improving temporarily with over-the-counter medications or support like a cart. Noel shares that he waited too long, ultimately needing surgery after exhausting options like physical therapy, and emphasizes practical changes such as supportive shoes, mattresses, pillows, chairs, and better posture, along with core strengthening and weight loss. They stress choosing an experienced surgical center, understanding recovery expectations and risks (including infection), having adequate home support after surgery, and being cautious with NSAID overuse while considering alternatives like topicals, acupuncture, and acupressure.00:00 Back Pain Warning Signs01:02 Early Symptoms Explained02:01 When to See a Doctor02:41 Exhausting Non Surgical Options03:35 Shoes Posture and Core05:23 Surgery Recovery and BLT Rules06:46 Choosing the Right Spine Center08:28 Post Op Discomfort and Weight Loss09:19 Injections Relapse and Long Term Habits14:00 Hospital Discharge and Home Support18:01 MRI Findings and Alternative Therapies20:06 Medication Caution and Final Takeaways22:06 Wrap Up and Subscribe📥 FREE DOWNLOAD: Your Health Change Navigation Guide A beautiful 2-page printable with the Three Questions, your Navigation Team roles, trusted health resources, and more. → https://www.healthybygeorge.com/shop💌 JOIN GLOWUP — Dr. George's free newsletter on healthy aging, mindfulness & intentional living: → https://www.healthybygeorge.com/#news...🎙️ ABOUT DR. Why “Irrational” Acts of Kindness Are a Powerful Health Habit (Self-Expansion, Awe & Aging Well)Mary Catherine George (Healthy by George) argues that spontaneous, slightly embarrassing “irrational” gestures—like buying expensive artisanal chocolates and giving them to a neighbor—are legitimate health behaviors that boost well-being as we age. Drawing on relationship psychology and Arthur and Elaine Aron’s Self-Expansion Theory, she explains that novel, unexpected shared experiences (like an unplanned day trip) can increase closeness, reduce boredom, and improve satisfaction, even when the experience isn’t perfect. She also describes research on awe (Dacher Keltner’s work) linking awe experiences to improved vagal tone and lower inflammation markers, plus studies showing instructed “awe walks” and daily awe are associated with more positive emotions, less distress, fewer physical complaints, and less stress. She highlights evidence that spending money on others, acts of kindness, and expressed gratitude can improve well-being and aging self-perception, and offers practical ideas for scheduling unexpected outings and gestures.Discover simple wellness tips to improve your daily health habits.
